Kruger

Kruger rewards a route that respects the distance between gates, camps and wildlife-viewing areas. Choose a manageable section of the park and give yourself time to stop and observe.

Your starting point

Start with one section, not the full park

Consider three or four nights in one camp or two nearby bases for a first visit. Choose your entry and exit points before settling the nights. If you are combining Kruger with another part of South Africa, keep the flight or road connection separate from the time you expect to spend watching wildlife.

Suggested lengths are starting points for a conversation. Your final route depends on your dates, interests and availability.

Camp location: the foundation of the route

We work backwards from where you will sleep, using the official gate and camp information, so your first day reaches camp comfortably before the gates close. [1]

Guided drives: reserve a different experience

SANParks offers guided game drives, with availability and departure arrangements linked to the camp. We balance these with the self-drive time in your route, and for families we check minimum ages and vehicle arrangements before making a particular drive the centre of the holiday. [2]

Self-drive: stop often, travel less

Park roads and viewing rules shape a self-drive day. Keep to permitted roads, observe the rules and allow time for unexpected stops. A short loop with patience can suit the day better than a long route chosen simply to cover more of the map. [3]

When to go

Dry-season visibility or greener surroundings

SANParks describes hot, rainy summers around October–March and drier winters around April–September. Sparse winter vegetation can make viewing easier, while summer brings greener surroundings. Winter drives start and finish cool, so pack a warm layer; we follow the current park notices for you, as weather can also affect access. [4]

Getting around

Gate hours are part of the itinerary

Kruger’s entrance and camp gates close at night, and times vary by season. We plan your arrival around the current schedule, the right gate and a comfortable drive to camp, and follow SANParks’ latest notices for any road or camp changes. [1] [5]

A little clarity before you go

Questions before you plan

Can we arrive at any gate and drive to our camp?

We choose the gate that suits your camp and the daylight you have, after looking at the internal distance and current road access. The nearest gate to the airport is not always the best one for your accommodation. [1]

Is a guided drive included with every stay?

Not automatically. We set out what your accommodation covers, which drives can be reserved and the activity requirements, so options are easy to compare. [2]
