V&A Waterfront

Plan a relaxed harbour day within your Cape Town stay. The Waterfront brings together indoor attractions, places to eat and a working harbour, with the option of a separately planned Robben Island visit.

Your starting point

A half-day to unwind, or a full day with one anchor

For an easy visit, allow a half-day for the harbour and a meal. For a full day, choose one main attraction and leave time around it. If Robben Island is the priority, plan the day around its confirmed departure and return rather than fitting the ferry between several other bookings.

Suggested lengths are starting points for a conversation. Your final route depends on your dates, interests and availability.

Harbour and Quays: slow the pace

The Waterfront’s Quays connect areas such as Victoria Wharf, Nobel Square and the Clock Tower. We use the district map to plan a comfortable loop and a meeting point. Allow time to sit by the water rather than making the whole visit a walk between attractions. [1]

Indoor time: choose one main visit

The district includes the Two Oceans Aquarium around the Dry Dock area, with other cultural options nearby. Pick the attraction that fits your group, and we arrange the booking for your day. An indoor visit can be a useful anchor when outdoor plans elsewhere in Cape Town change. [1]

Robben Island: a separate commitment

Ferries depart from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the Waterfront. The museum’s general tour includes the island visit and return boat journey, and departures depend on weather and demand. The museum gives about three and a half hours for the general tour, including both crossings; on the island, a short walk leads to buses that take you around the sites before the tour ends at the prison and Nelson Mandela’s cell. We reserve that time for the full experience, raise any access needs with the museum before booking and keep a Waterfront alternative ready in case a sailing is affected. [2]

When to go

Keep the harbour day adaptable

South African Tourism describes November to March as Cape Town’s summer, busiest around the mid-December to mid-January school holidays, and late June to mid-September as winter, when cold fronts bring rain and strong winds. Those are the days when the Waterfront’s indoor attractions earn their place. [3] For an ordinary Waterfront visit, you can balance outdoor walking with indoor time as the day changes. A Robben Island sailing depends on the weather, so we follow the operator’s status and instructions for you on the day. [2]

Getting around

Name the meeting point, not just the district

The Waterfront contains several precincts and attractions. We set a specific pickup, entrance or meeting point before you set off. For the ferry, we plan your arrival at the Nelson Mandela Gateway with time to spare, since a drop-off elsewhere in the district can leave a walk. [1] [2]

A little clarity before you go

Questions before you plan

Is this the same as the Cape Town guide?

No. This page helps plan a day in the harbour district. Our Cape Town guide covers the wider stay, including mountain and peninsula choices. You can use both without adding an extra hotel or repeating the same itinerary.

Can we combine a ferry trip with an airport departure?

We look at the tour length and the airport transfer together. As sailings depend on the weather, we prefer to keep the island visit away from a tight onward connection, ideally with another day in hand.
