Tasmania
Choose a part of Tasmania and give it time. A few well-spaced stays can make room for coastal stops, local food and walks without turning the holiday into a race around the island.

Your starting point
A week with a clear route, not a lap at any cost
For a first week, consider Hobart and the east coast, or a northern route with Cradle Mountain, rather than trying to include every region. We help you pick two or three bases with comfortable driving between them. If both coast and highlands are essential, we add nights or drop a distant stop before booking the accommodation.
Suggested lengths are starting points for a conversation. Your final route depends on your dates, interests and availability.
Hobart and the coast: leave room for small stops
Discover Tasmania’s road-trip guide connects Hobart’s cultural attractions with the east coast. Choose the museums, coastal towns or food stops that interest you, then spread them across the route. A map line that joins everything is only a starting point; the places where you stop are the reason to make the journey. [1]
Cradle Mountain: prepare for the park day
Tasmania Parks provides dedicated shuttle information for Cradle Mountain, including current arrangements and access conditions. We plan your walking day around the shuttle, sort the right park-entry arrangements and allow time for the transfer to the walk as well as the walk itself. [2]
Choose the walk before choosing the overnight base
Start with the track you want and your comfortable walking duration, then choose accommodation that supports it. At Cradle Mountain, for example, Tasmania Parks describes the Dove Lake Circuit as a 6 km, 2–3 hour walk with short steep sections, a rough surface and many steps, while the 1.1 km Enchanted Walk takes about 20 minutes on a firmer surface suitable for most ages. Snow, rain, wind and sun are possible there at any time of year, so pack warm, waterproof layers even in summer. We keep a long drive and your most ambitious walk on different days. [5] [6]
When to go
Season changes the shape of a road trip
Discover Tasmania highlights long summer days and a quieter winter with highland snow possibilities. Tell us the experiences that matter and we’ll fit them to the daylight, roads and park access for your dates, with some flexibility near a major outdoor stop so one poor forecast doesn’t cost you the experience. [3]
Getting around
Treat driving times as the start of the calculation
Discover Tasmania notes that roads can be winding, and its drive-time guide asks drivers to watch for wildlife around dawn and dusk. We add stops, meals and time outside the car to each driving estimate, and start and finish the road trip at the ports or airports that suit your arrival and departure. [4]

Questions before you plan
Is one week enough for the whole island?
A week can be rewarding with a focused route. We suggest choosing a region or two and staying longer in each base, rather than measuring the holiday by whether it completes a loop. Add time if the west coast, east coast and highlands are all priorities.
Can we leave Cradle Mountain arrangements until that morning?
It is better to plan them ahead, and we do that with the rest of your trip. The right access plan depends on the outing and season, and staying nearby still means using the park’s own shuttle and visitor arrangements, so we include those in your plan. [2]
