Finland

Choose which Finland you want to experience: lakeside summer, a design-led city break or a northern winter stay. The season changes the journey, not just the clothes you pack.

Your starting point

A week with one landscape beyond Helsinki

For a first journey, consider a short Helsinki stay and several nights in either Lakeland or Lapland. Choose the region around the experience you want most. A lakeside summer holiday and a northern winter holiday call for different accommodation, transport and activities; combining both regions can add more movement than enjoyment.

Suggested lengths are starting points for a conversation. Your final route depends on your dates, interests and availability.

Helsinki: leave time for everyday city life

Choose a design collection, neighbourhood walk or market visit, then leave the rest of the day easy. Visit Finland includes Helsinki’s harbour market among its seasonal food experiences. We match market and venue visits to the season, as outdoor stalls change through the year. [1]

Lakeland: make the accommodation part of the plan

If the purpose is a quieter stay, we choose the property around lake access, sauna arrangements and meals. Clarify whether you want a staffed hotel or a more independent setting. Visit Finland notes that most cottages are remote enough that a car is the practical option. [5] We plan how shopping, transport and evening meals will work before you arrive.

Lapland: build a holiday beyond the aurora

Visit Finland explains that seeing northern lights requires dark nights as well as suitable conditions. Choose daytime experiences you will enjoy regardless of the sky. Several nights give the sky more chances to clear. [2] Winter in Lapland is cold, with Rovaniemi averaging around −10°C to −20°C, and in the far north the sun does not rise for several weeks around midwinter; March and April bring more daylight for anyone less keen on long dark evenings outdoors. [3] Night trains run to Rovaniemi, Kolari and Kemijärvi, and a resort can still be a long road transfer beyond: Levi is 80 km from Kolari station. [4]

When to go

Decide between long light and dark-night experiences

Finland’s tourism guidance distinguishes summer daylight from the darker aurora season. We choose the dates around the activity you want, then confirm local conditions and operating calendars, including snow activities for the place and period. [2]

Getting around

Protect the connection to a remote stay

We work out the complete journey from the arrival airport or railway station to the accommodation, and arrange late arrivals, luggage and winter transfers for a remote base. After a city arrival, a night before a long onward journey keeps the start easy.

A little clarity before you go

Questions before you plan

Are northern lights guaranteed on a Lapland trip?

Nature sets the timing, so no trip can promise them: darkness, cloud cover and auroral activity all play a part. We plan the stay around experiences that are worthwhile whatever the sky does. [2]

Can a lakeside stay work without driving?

It can, with the right property and transfers. We look at meals and getting around locally, as well as the first pickup, when we choose the stay.
