Vietnam

Limestone islands, lantern-lit evenings and street-side flavours. Choose the part of Vietnam that fits your month and your pace, then build a journey with time to enjoy it.

Your starting point

Choose a region, then decide whether to go further

For 6–8 nights, our suggestion is to focus on northern Vietnam or a central Vietnam stay. With 10–14 nights, discuss two regions and leave a clear travel day between them. One region at an unhurried pace, with fewer flights and hotel changes, is the easier shape for young children or older travellers. In central Vietnam, Hoi An can be hot for town walks, so beach time is a useful balance for families. [2] A north-to-south journey needs more than a list of cities: every additional stop takes time from the places you came to enjoy.

Suggested lengths are starting points for a conversation. Your final route depends on your dates, interests and availability.

Hanoi and northern scenery

Hanoi gives a city starting point for northern Vietnam. Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh can add a different landscape. Decide whether time on the water is central to the trip, and we’ll give each northern excursion the time it deserves. [1]

Hoi An and the central coast

Hoi An’s old town and Da Nang make a central Vietnam starting point. Choose how much of the stay should be town exploration and how much should be beach time. Keeping one comfortable base may suit your group better than changing hotels repeatedly. [1]

Ho Chi Minh City and the south

The southern city and the Mekong region offer another distinct chapter. Add them because the experience interests you, rather than to complete a map of Vietnam. On a shorter holiday, saving the south for a return visit can create a calmer route. [1] [2]

When to go

Each region has its own weather

Northern Vietnam can be cool and misty in winter, while summer is hotter and wetter. Hoi An’s wetter period comes later in the year than many travellers expect. Ho Chi Minh City stays warm, with a broadly wetter May–November period. We match the season to your exact stops rather than applying one label to the whole country. [2]

Getting around

Allow for the distance between regions

Domestic flights, trains and road journeys offer different ways to move through Vietnam. For a short trip, we compare door-to-door travel time before choosing. A scenic rail journey can be part of the experience, and we keep long transfers off the days set aside for your must-see sights. [3]

A little clarity before you go

Questions before you plan

Should we include a Ha Long Bay cruise?

Include it if time on the water is a priority for your group. We’ll talk you through an overnight stay versus a day outing, boarding transfers and the time you actually spend aboard. Weather can affect departures, so we agree how any change would be handled when we book. [2]

Can we see north, central and south Vietnam in one week?

Our recommendation is to narrow the route. Three regions in a short week can turn much of the holiday into travel days. Pick your strongest interests first; a focused journey usually gives more room for meals, walks and rest.
