Sossusvlei

The dunes are the reason to come; a well-planned early start is what lets you enjoy them. Stay close enough to the access point, choose your walks and leave the hottest hours unhurried.

Your starting point

Two nights near Sesriem for a full desert morning

Consider two nights in the Sesriem area so the dune visit has a dedicated day between arrival and departure. If photography is central to the holiday, an extra night can give more flexibility. We compare each stay’s location and access arrangements for you, as nearby stays do not all allow the same early start.

Suggested lengths are starting points for a conversation. Your final route depends on your dates, interests and availability.

Sossusvlei: let the light set the pace

Namibia Tourism Board describes Sossusvlei as a clay pan enclosed by the Namib’s dunes and highlights early morning light. Choose a few stopping points and allow time to take them in. You do not need to climb every dune to enjoy the landscape. [1]

Deadvlei: decide how much walking suits you

Nearby Deadvlei is known for its pale clay floor and standing dead tree trunks. Reaching it involves walking through sandy terrain. We go through the full approach from your drop-off and agree a turnaround point if your group has different walking abilities. [1]

Sesriem Canyon: a separate, optional visit

Namibia Wildlife Resorts lists Sesriem Canyon among the area’s attractions. Consider it as an alternative part of the day, rather than automatically adding it after a demanding dune walk. We confirm conditions and access for you before including a descent. [2]

When to go

Early starts matter in every season

Namibia Tourism Board describes hotter summer conditions and cold winter nights, with especially high heat possible in the desert. We plan the exposed walking around the forecast for your visit. Pack for the early start as well as the daytime, and we talk through walking distances with you before you choose a big climb. [3]

Getting around

Access and shuttles, confirmed for your dates

We confirm the gate arrangements and the vehicle needed for each part of your visit. NWR moved its own shuttle departure to Sesriem Campsite. [4] Access arrangements for the final sand stretch to Deadvlei changed more than once during 2026, so we confirm the current rules, shuttle and meeting point for your dates and plan the morning around them.

Your trip. Your kind of days.

A little clarity before you go

Questions before you plan

Do we have to climb a large dune?

No. Tell us whether the priority is photography, landscape views or a particular walk. A route with shorter stops may suit your group better; the climb should be a deliberate choice, not an assumed requirement.

Can we leave straight after the dune visit?

You can, though our suggestion is to keep your biggest desert morning and a long unfamiliar drive on different days. We weigh up the walk, the time back at the accommodation and the onward drive with you; another night often makes the route calmer.
