Your starting point
One or two nights that help the wider journey
Consider a night after a long arrival flight, or two if you want a city day before travelling onward. Keep enough time for the vehicle handover, supplies and a route briefing. At the end of the trip, we time the final drive against flight check-in, so you are not racing back from a distant stop that morning.
Suggested lengths are starting points for a conversation. Your final route depends on your dates, interests and availability.
Central heritage: choose a compact route
Namibia Tourism Board lists Christuskirche, the Independence Memorial Museum and other central landmarks among Windhoek’s attractions. Choose a few places that fit your interests, and we confirm visitor access. A guide can add the historical context, so the buildings are more than architectural photo stops. [1]
Crafts and a meal: an unhurried city pause
The tourism board highlights craft markets and a range of places to eat. Leave space for a deliberate stop rather than using Windhoek only for errands. If gifts are part of the plan, think about luggage space and your onward journey before buying fragile items. [1]
Prepare for the road: use the first day well
Before leaving, make time to understand the vehicle, navigation and the next accommodation’s location. Agree on how to contact the rental provider and what to do if the route changes. A calm handover is more useful than adding a distant sightseeing stop to an already full arrival day. A self-drive suits travellers comfortable driving on the left on long gravel stretches, where the tourism board recommends staying at or below 80 km/h; if that does not suit the group, a guided trip or the charter and scheduled domestic flights the board describes are alternatives. [3]
When to go
Pack for the next region as well as the city
Namibia Tourism Board describes hot summers, cooler winter nights and a different coastal climate. On a longer road trip we look at the weather for each region on your route, so keep layers handy rather than packing only for the daytime temperature at arrival. [2]
Getting around
Use road conditions, not distance alone
Much of Namibia’s road network is gravel, and the tourism board advises allowing longer travel times than on paved roads. We confirm the route with the vehicle provider, including any restrictions and fuel planning, and plan each day to reach the next stay with time to spare. [3]

Questions before you plan
Is Windhoek only an airport stop?
It can be a practical overnight stop, but a dedicated city day may suit travellers interested in history, crafts and food. Choose that time deliberately; if your main interest is elsewhere, use the stay to arrive rested and prepared.
Should we drive straight to Sossusvlei after landing?
We look at your flight arrival, rest, the vehicle handover and the full onward route together. If the day is already long, an overnight stop gives a more manageable start.
