Muscat
Let Muscat unfold through its neighbourhoods: the mosque, the harbour and the museums each offer a different introduction to Oman. Keep the journeys between them unhurried.

Your starting point
Three nights before a wider Oman journey
Consider three nights for a city introduction, with one day around the mosque and cultural interests and another around Mutrah and Old Muscat. For the base, a hotel near Mutrah keeps the souq, fort and harbour close; Qurum, between the mosque and Mutrah, has a sandy beach with a promenade; and seaside areas such as Bandar Jissah, south-east of the old town, are quieter but mean longer drives to the city sights. [3] If Muscat begins a longer road trip, avoid using every city hour for excursions outside it. Choose the onward region deliberately and leave the final city evening easy before the next transfer. Most sightseeing here is short walks between car journeys, with the longest on foot in Mutrah Souq’s alleys and along the harbour. Experience Oman gives the average June to August temperature as around 35°C, so keep summer walks short and plan them for the cooler hours. [3] [4]
Suggested lengths are starting points for a conversation. Your final route depends on your dates, interests and availability.
Grand Mosque: plan around the visiting window
Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is a major architectural and religious landmark. Visiting runs at set times, so we confirm the current hours and clothing guidance for your dates, plan transport around them and leave time to appreciate the building without rushing. [1]
Mutrah: pair the souq with harbour time
Experience Oman describes Mutrah Souq as a traditional market of interconnecting alleys. Give it an unhurried visit and a separate pause beside the harbour. If you enter through one part of the market and leave through another, we agree the pickup point with your driver beforehand. [2]
National Museum: add context to the journey
Muscat’s official destination guide highlights the National Museum as an introduction to Oman’s history. Choose a museum visit before a wider country route if understanding the places matters to you. If a performance or another cultural booking appeals, we confirm its date and availability before building the day around it. [3]
When to go
Keep the most exposed walking flexible
Experience Oman lists September–May as a preferred visiting period for Mutrah Souq. We order harbour time, market browsing and indoor visits around the forecast, and favour short, comfortable walks over ambitious routes planned from a map. [2]
Getting around
Connect the neighbourhoods, not just the landmarks
The Grand Mosque lies well west of Mutrah and Old Muscat, so plan the journeys between the mosque, harbour area, museum and hotel as part of the day. Experience Oman’s visitor guide notes that taxis are widely available in Muscat, though not all use meters, and that the Otaxi and Mwasalat Taxi apps work in the capital. Mwasalat’s intercity coaches include Salalah but do not reach small villages, wadis or deserts, and some mountain roads require a four-wheel drive. [4] Salalah is a separate southern Oman stage, so we plan its connection and nights on their own rather than as a Muscat excursion.

Questions before you plan
Should we add mountains or desert to a short Muscat stay?
Pick the one extension that matters most and we will work out the full journey. If only a few nights are available, a focused city stay can be more rewarding than spending each day on a different long excursion.
