Banff National Park
Choose the mountain experience first: open-water lakes, a walking holiday or a winter stay. Then we build Banff around the access arrangements that make those days possible.

- Scenic walks

Your starting point
Three or four nights with a reserved lake day
Consider three or four nights in the Banff and Lake Louise area, with one day built around your main lake visit and another for a walk or scenic outing. Keep a flexible day if mountain views are the reason for travelling. We compare one base with a split stay and choose whichever keeps travel shortest.
Suggested lengths are starting points for a conversation. Your final route depends on your dates, interests and availability.
Lake Louise: settle the transport first
Parks Canada recommends transit or its reserved shuttle for dependable lake access. We arrange your shuttle place separately from the hotel, then plan the rest of the day around its departure point and return. [1]
Moraine Lake: arrive by shuttle or licensed tour
Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year-round. Parks Canada lists its own shuttles, licensed commercial operators and registered guests of the lakeside lodge as the permitted ways in, and its shuttles run in summer only (1 June to 12 October in 2026, weather permitting). We secure the right option for your dates first, then build the day around the lake. [1]
A mountain day: match the activity to the group
Agree whether everyone wants lakeside time, a short walk or a longer hike. Parks Canada lists the Lake Louise Lakeshore Trail as an easy stroll of about an hour return and the Moraine Lake Rockpile Loop as a 30-minute walk, while the Lake Agnes Trail climbs about 495 metres and takes two and a half to three hours return. Visitors with mobility needs can use Parks Canada’s accessible shuttle by showing their shuttle ticket. We keep a quieter day for settling into the mountain setting rather than adding another long drive straight away, and we check current trail conditions for the walk you choose. [3] [1]
When to go
A turquoise-lake trip and a snow trip are different holidays
Banff and Lake Louise Tourism distinguishes summer lake and hiking experiences from winter snow activities. Pick the experience you want before picking the month, and we match it to the seasonal road, shuttle and trail access for your dates. Early-season and winter visits give the lakes a different look from the summer photographs, so tell us which scenes you have in mind. [2]
Getting around
Choose Banff or Lake Louise around the day plan
We match your accommodation to the transport departure points and the activities you want. For a stay without a car, we line up every connection, not just the main lake shuttle. If Banff is one stage of a longer Rockies trip, the transfer gets its own time so your mountain days stay full.

Questions before you plan
Can we simply drive to Moraine Lake?
Not in a private car: Parks Canada keeps Moraine Lake Road closed to personal vehicles year-round. We reserve one of the authorised options for your dates, such as Parks Canada’s shuttle or a licensed operator, and plan the rest of the day around it. [1]
Should Vancouver and Banff share a short holiday?
They can work well together once we have compared the full journey and the usable days in each. They suit different kinds of stay; our Vancouver city guide covers the waterfront, park and food days. If the connection would take the time you wanted for lakes or city exploring, we suggest an extra night or one clear focus.
