Switzerland
Let a few Swiss bases do the work. Scenic trains, lakeside time and a flexible mountain day can feel more complete than moving hotels for every famous view.
- Scenic rail
- Lake towns
- Mountain days
Your starting point
Seven to nine nights with two main bases
Consider Lucerne and a Bernese Oberland base for a first journey, leaving arrival and departure connections straightforward. Give each place several nights so outdoor days can move with the weather. Two bases and rail-led days keep the pace steady; the effort sits in the mountain days, where changes between trains, lifts and boats add up and published hiking times do not include breaks. [4] If long ascents are difficult, choose outings where a lift does the climbing. Add another region only when a particular rail route or landscape is important enough to justify the extra transfer. The same applies to Liechtenstein, on the eastern border: our Liechtenstein guide plans it as a full day or two nights.
Suggested lengths are starting points for a conversation. Your final route depends on your dates, interests and availability.
Lucerne: keep the lake and town in the plan
Switzerland Tourism presents Lucerne as a gateway to central Switzerland, with lake and mountain connections. Leave time for the town itself and a chosen waterside outing. A mountain excursion should complement the stay rather than occupy every available day. [1]
Bernese Oberland: choose the base around your outings
The official scenic-rail guidance links Interlaken with the wider mountain region. Decide which excursions matter before selecting accommodation. The station nearest the hotel and the number of local changes can have a bigger effect on daily comfort than the hotel’s view alone. [1]
Scenic rail: pick a section you want to experience
The Grand Train Tour brings together several different routes. Choose a meaningful section instead of trying to complete them all. A panoramic journey deserves time in the schedule, so we give it room rather than following it straight away with another major outing. [2]
When to go
Keep the main mountain day flexible
Switzerland Tourism gives daytime temperatures of about 18–28 °C in July and August and −2 to 7 °C in January and February, varying with altitude, and notes that higher trails can stay snowbound into the summer. High walks therefore suit the summer months, while lake towns work across a longer season that includes spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). In winter, snow is no longer the rule in the lowlands, so a snow day means going higher. We choose the day to go higher from local forecasts, visibility and operating notices, reserve only what needs advance booking and keep alternatives ready for cloudier days. [3] [4]
Getting around
Match passes and reservations to the actual itinerary
We list the rail, boat, bus and mountain services on your route and confirm pass coverage and reservations for each, including any specific arrangements on scenic routes. We also factor in the hotel approach and luggage when comparing bases, particularly if the final connection is uphill or involves several changes. [2]

Questions before you plan
Should we change hotels for every scenic train?
Not necessarily. A few suitable bases can support varied days. Move when the journey itself or a different region is a priority.
Does one travel pass automatically cover every mountain excursion?
Not always. We check each service for supplements or reservations before recommending a pass.
