Liechtenstein

Look beyond a quick stop in Vaduz. A little more time in Liechtenstein lets you pair its cultural centre with a mountain day chosen for your walking comfort.

Your starting point

One full day, or two nights for a mountain contrast

A full day can introduce Vaduz; two nights allow more flexibility for Malbun and a slower cultural visit. Choose the overnight base according to whether the valley or mountain setting matters most. When adding Liechtenstein to a trip through Switzerland or Austria, we build in the real connection time rather than treating it as a stop with no travel.

Suggested lengths are starting points for a conversation. Your final route depends on your dates, interests and availability.

Vaduz: use the town walk to connect the story

The official Vaduz circular route links museums, the government district, Old Vaduz and the Rhine setting. Pick the sections that suit your interests and available time. A circular route is a useful framework, but a substantial museum visit deserves its own allowance. [1]

The castle view: enjoy the setting

The tourism route identifies Vaduz Castle as the residence of the princely family. Plan the visit around its setting and viewpoint, and we talk through the approach with you before adding it to a gentle town walk. [1]

Malbun: read the route profile

The official Malbun circuit combines mountain paths with an option to use the Sareis chairlift. We look at the ascent, descent and lift timetable with you before choosing it. A lift-assisted walk can still involve uneven ground and a significant descent, so we match it to your walking comfort. [2]

When to go

Keep the mountain day movable

Malbun’s lift company runs separate summer and winter seasons: in 2026 the Sareis chairlift ran from 13 June to 18 October, and the 2026–27 winter season is scheduled from 19 December to 4 April. Outside those dates, plan a Vaduz-led visit. [4] [5] We keep the higher walk flexible around the local forecast and route information, and confirm the lift for your dates separately from the hotel. If the weather turns, a longer cultural visit in Vaduz gives the day a different purpose. [2]

Getting around

Connect the neighbouring route to the actual base

LIEmobil buses run across the border to the railway stations at Sargans and Buchs in Switzerland and to Feldkirch in Austria, so a rail arrival can continue by bus to Vaduz or Malbun. [3] We arrange the last bus, transfer or driving stage to your accommodation, particularly for a Malbun overnight. If you are visiting for the day, we plan where luggage stays and how you continue afterwards. An overnight should simplify the experience, not create an avoidable backtrack.

A little clarity before you go

Questions before you plan

Is a Vaduz stop enough to see the mountain side?

No. Malbun works best as its own outing, with the connection planned and the day kept flexible for the weather.

Does using a chairlift remove the walking difficulty?

Not entirely. The descent, surface and remaining route still count, so we choose the walk with you from the full route description. [2]
