Austria

Pair Austria’s cultural cities with time beside a lake or in the mountains. A few well-chosen rail stages leave more room for the places between the famous views.

Your starting point

Seven to nine nights for cities and one landscape

Consider Vienna and Salzburg with a separate lake-region stay if you have a week or more. Keep Vienna for collections and performances, then change the pace further west. On a longer journey, Innsbruck and the western Alps can join the route while keeping your full days in the first two cities. Lifts do most of the climbing on a mountain day: the Nordkette funicular runs from Innsbruck’s old town to the Hungerburg in about eight minutes, with cable cars continuing higher. [7] The more tiring parts of this route are long hours standing in Vienna’s museums and managing luggage at each rail change.

Suggested lengths are starting points for a conversation. Your final route depends on your dates, interests and availability.

Vienna: organise around one cultural booking

Choose the museum collection or performance that matters most and give it a comfortable place in the day. Keep neighbourhood walks and meals nearby. We find out what is on for your dates and arrange the booking that matters most.

Salzburg: allow a day beyond the arrival walk

The national rail itinerary links Salzburg with Austria’s wider city and lake regions. Stay long enough for a deliberate cultural visit and time outdoors rather than treating the city as a station change. Decide separately whether a surrounding landscape excursion fits your interests. [1]

Lakes or western Alps: choose a different pace

The Salzkammergut and the western Alpine destinations appear along different stages of Austria’s rail routes. Pick one landscape for a short holiday. We choose a lakeside hotel with an easy onward bus or local transfer. [1]

When to go

Match the excursion to its operating season

A city-focused visit can be organised around indoor collections and performances. Mountain lifts, boats and walking routes run to their own seasons, which we match to your dates. On the Wolfgangsee the main boat season runs from late June to early September, with a reduced service into late October [3], and Innsbruck’s Nordkette lifts pause for maintenance in November between their summer and winter seasons. [4] In Vienna, the State Opera takes its summer break in July and August, while most Christmas markets open in the second half of November. [5] [6] Leave your most scenic outdoor day flexible, especially when a viewpoint is the main reason for travelling.

Getting around

Rail works best with the final connection included

Austria’s visitor guidance covers day and night trains, but the useful journey is from hotel to hotel. We arrange reservations, station changes and the local connection to the lake or mountain base. Night trains run on selected routes, and we book a sleeper where one fits the journey. [2]

A little clarity before you go

Questions before you plan

Should we visit Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck in a short week?

Choose two main bases if you want time for museums and an outdoor excursion. Add a third when the extra move supports a particular interest rather than completing a city checklist.

Does a rail ticket cover the mountain excursion?

Not always. We work out the train, bus, boat or lift for the day and what each ticket includes, so the plan is settled before you go. [2]
