South Korea

South Korea pairs palace neighbourhoods and contemporary city life with coastal stays and historic towns. A first journey can link Seoul and Busan, with Gyeongju as a deliberate heritage stop if you have more time.

Your starting point

Start with Seoul and one contrasting base

Our suggested starting point is 7–9 nights for Seoul and Busan. Give Seoul time for neighbourhoods as well as major sights, then change the pace by the coast. With one rail journey between the two cities, this route can suit a mixed-age group, but city days still mean plenty of walking and station transfers, and summers are hot and humid. In Seoul, the Seoul Tourism Organization’s Danurim Accessible Tourism Center supports older travellers, travellers with disabilities and families with infants, including minivan and travel-aid bookings made in advance. [3] [5] If heritage is the main interest, discuss adding Gyeongju with extra nights instead of treating it as a rushed stop between hotels.

Suggested lengths are starting points for a conversation. Your final route depends on your dates, interests and availability.

Seoul: palace time and neighbourhood time

Choose a royal palace visit, then leave room for streets, shops and cafés in the surrounding areas. Avoid making every day a list of unrelated city attractions. Tell us if Korean culture, design, shopping or entertainment is the main reason for the trip. [1]

Busan: put the coast into the itinerary

Haeundae and Songjeong are among Busan’s recognised beach destinations. Choose a hotel area around the evenings you want, and consider the journeys to your other sights before deciding how many nights to stay. [1]

Gyeongju: make heritage the focus

Gyeongju’s historic sites, including its ancient tomb area and Bulguksa Temple, offer a different emphasis from the two big cities. If these places interest you, allow time for them rather than adding a third base simply to cover more ground. [1] [2]

When to go

Four seasons, four different travel experiences

Korea’s tourism organisation describes spring and autumn as generally mild, summer as hot and humid, and winter as cold and dry. Decide whether outdoor walking or winter scenery matters most to you. If blossom or autumn colour is the goal, we plan around the usual timing for each place, which shifts a little with the weather each year. [3]

Getting around

Use the rail connection to simplify the route

The Gyeongbu rail route links Seoul and Busan, with KTX high-speed services among the options. We confirm the exact service and station for your date before arranging hotel transfers, and plan the last part of the journey with luggage, especially if you are staying away from the centre. [4]

Make it yours

Your trip. Your kind of days.

Tell us your season, interest in Seoul culture or coastal time, and any fixed event dates. Mention whether Gyeongju or Jeju is a priority.

A little clarity before you go

Questions before you plan

Can Jeju be added to a short Seoul and Busan trip?

It is better treated as a separate decision with additional travel time. If Jeju is your priority, tell us at the beginning so we can compare a simpler route rather than adding another destination after the dates are already full.

Should we book around a specific concert or event?

Yes, if the event is essential. Share its dates and your ticket plans, and we’ll build the rest of the holiday around it once your tickets are secured.
