Rarotonga
Settle into one Rarotonga base and let the days open up around it. Combine lagoon time with a cultural evening and a little island exploring, without making every day another transfer.

Your starting point
Five or six nights in a base that suits your evenings
Consider five or six nights with a lagoon outing, an island exploration day and open time between them. Choose accommodation by how you want to spend evenings as well as the beach view. If another Cook Island is part of the dream, we weigh that separate connection against the nights you have before dividing a short stay.
Suggested lengths are starting points for a conversation. Your final route depends on your dates, interests and availability.
Lagoon day: choose how you want to take part
Cook Islands Tourism lists lagoon outings, including glass-bottom boat experiences, among Rarotonga’s activities. We find out the boarding point, time on the water and options for anyone who prefers not to swim. The best outing for your group depends on participation and comfort as much as the scenery. [1]
Island exploring: make a few stops count
The tourism board describes a main coastal road circling Rarotonga. Select a few places you want to visit and allow time to stay at each, rather than treating a circuit as a checklist. If you want to stay on somewhere for dinner, we plan the return journey too. [2]
Culture and the interior: add a different kind of day
The official Rarotonga visitor guide includes cultural island nights and inland walking options. Choose the experience you are interested in, and we’ll fit it to the current programme or trail. The hike to Te Rua Manga (the Needle) is a half-day walk through the island’s jungle and up along the ridges, and the visitor guide recommends a guided tour for the full Cross Island Trek; a cultural evening needs no such preparation. For a gentler pace, the drive around the whole island takes about 45 minutes, and buses stop anywhere along the main road when waved down. [1]
When to go
Use the seasonal pattern as your guide
Cook Islands Tourism describes April–November as generally drier and the warmer part of the year as more humid, with rainfall more likely in the summer months. We use this as a broad guide and keep your lagoon outing flexible, so it can move with the local conditions. [3]
Getting around
Clockwise, anticlockwise or your own wheels
The tourism board lists clockwise and anticlockwise buses on Rarotonga’s main road. We tell you which direction serves each place you plan to visit and when the return buses run. If you would rather drive, we sort out the licence requirements, rental and child seats with the provider in advance. [2]

Questions before you plan
Do we need to move hotels to explore Rarotonga?
Usually not. One base works well when its location and transport fit the places you want to visit, and we choose it with your evenings and day outings in mind before suggesting any hotel move.
Should we add Aitutaki to a short Rarotonga stay?
It works as its own stage, with its own transport and time. Tell us whether a slower Rarotonga stay or another island matters more, and we’ll plan the connection before dividing your nights.
