Greece

Choose an island for the days you want to have, then give Athens its own time. Greece feels less hurried when ferry days are part of the plan rather than gaps between sights.

Your starting point

Eight to ten nights with Athens and one island

Consider a few nights in Athens and a longer stay on one island. Choose Crete if you want a larger island with several kinds of day, or a smaller island if settling into one base is the priority. We add a second island when the sailing pattern and your available nights support it. The route suits travellers comfortable with one ferry day and some uphill walking: the Acropolis stands on a steep rock, so in summer an early start and rest stops make the climb easier for older travellers and children. [1]

Suggested lengths are starting points for a conversation. Your final route depends on your dates, interests and availability.

Athens: give the Acropolis a considered visit

The official destination guide explains the Acropolis as a group of monuments with a long and changing history. Choose a guided visit if that context matters; we arrange the entry and plan for the walking. Leave the surrounding day light enough for the climb and time outdoors. [1]

Crete: make ancient history one part of the stay

Knossos is near Heraklion and offers a focus for understanding Minoan culture. It need not be combined with distant beaches on the same day. Choose the island base and transfer plan around the balance of archaeology and downtime that you want. [2]

A smaller island: compare the daily experience

Official island guidance describes places such as Iraklia through their beaches, villages and walking routes. We look at the connection and local services when choosing a quiet island, so the peaceful setting also suits your dining, transport and access needs. [3]

When to go

Choose dates for the island, not a generic Greece season

Greece’s tourism board suggests April, October or the mild winter months for smaller crowds than the peak summer season, and those months suit walking in Athens. [4] For a smaller island in the shoulder season, we confirm the sailing pattern and local openings before choosing it. Exposed archaeological walks and long beach days suit different times of day, and we keep some activities flexible.

Getting around

Keep a buffer before the flight home

We book the port and operator, with time for boarding and the hotel connection. Where a ferry feeds into a flight, we suggest an overnight buffer rather than a tight same-day transfer, so the journey home stays relaxed.

A little clarity before you go

Questions before you plan

Do we need two islands to experience Greece?

No. Athens and one well-chosen island already offer distinct experiences, with less packing and more time ashore.

Is Crete just another short island stop?

Treat it as a substantial stay if you want both archaeology and coastal time. We choose a manageable area for your base, as one hotel cannot reach every part of the island easily. [2]
