Montenegro

Choose the coast, the mountains or a well-paced combination. Bays, bends and mountain roads make journeys longer than the map suggests, so we pace the route to match.

Your starting point

A week for the bay, longer to add mountain nights

Consider several nights around the Bay of Kotor, adding a separate Durmitor stay when the available time supports the road journey. Choose the order around arrival and departure. If the holiday is mainly coastal, keep it that way rather than spending each day on a different long inland excursion. A bay stay keeps journeys short; Durmitor adds winding mountain roads and walking at altitude, as the park rises from about 500 to 2,523 metres. [2]

Suggested lengths are starting points for a conversation. Your final route depends on your dates, interests and availability.

Bay of Kotor: pick a base for daily life

The national panoramic-road guidance connects several towns around the bay. Compare the hotel’s setting with the walks, meals and boat outings you want. Some bay-view properties need a car for ordinary journeys, so we look at the approach and local services when choosing your base. [1]

Durmitor: choose the level of activity

The official national-park guide describes a landscape used for hiking and other mountain activities. Decide whether you want a gentle outing, a viewpoint or a more demanding route. We talk through the exact trail with you and arrange a guide where the route needs one. [2]

A scenic road: allow time to stop

Montenegro’s panoramic routes include coastal and mountain circuits. Select a section that fits the driver’s confidence and the day’s conditions. A route’s appeal lies partly in its stops, so we build them into the day’s timing. [1]

When to go

Coast in summer, mountains for cooler days

Montenegro Tourism treats May to October as the main visiting period. The coast is busiest in July and August, when lower areas can be very hot and the northern mountains make a cooler alternative; January to March is the snow season. [3] Mountain weather can differ from the bay, so we plan inland days around the local forecast, confirm seasonal roads and activities for your dates and keep a shorter alternative ready. [1] [2]

Getting around

Make the inland transfer its own stage

Montenegro’s two airports are Tivat, on the Bay of Kotor, and Podgorica, inland; Tivat suits a bay-first route, while Podgorica can make sense when the trip starts or ends in the mountains. [4] We agree driving time, breaks and arrival arrangements with you before choosing the mountain accommodation, and build any cross-border crossing and onward journey into the plan. Demanding hikes go on a fresh day, not straight after a long road arrival.

A little clarity before you go

Questions before you plan

Can Durmitor be a quick extra from any coastal hotel?

It is a longer journey than it looks, so we plan it as its own stage. An overnight or longer stay is more useful if the mountains are an important part of the holiday.

Does a panoramic road suit every driver?

We look at gradients, bends, road conditions and vehicle needs for the section you choose, and can arrange a driver if that suits the group better. [1]
