Albania

Choose a southern journey through stone towns and the coast, or head north for mountain walking. Albania is more rewarding when the road trip has a clear direction.

Your starting point

Seven to nine nights with one main direction

For a first journey, consider a week or a little longer around Tirana, Berat and a southern coastal base. If mountain walking is the main reason for travelling, build a separate northern route instead. We plan the transfer days with you: short distances on the map can take longer by road, and fewer hotel changes leave more time in the towns.

Suggested lengths are starting points for a conversation. Your final route depends on your dates, interests and availability.

Berat: stay for the streets as well as the castle

Berat’s Mangalem, Gorica and Kala areas offer different perspectives on the historic town. Choose a walk that includes time inside a museum or religious building, and we arrange the visits around their opening times. The old quarters have steep lanes and uneven surfaces, so we pick accommodation that suits how you like to walk. [1]

The coast: decide how you want to spend the day

Pick a coastal base for the experience you want: a settled beach stay, village exploring or short outings with a driver. We’ll tell you how each beach is reached and how the return works, so the base suits everyone in your group.

The Albanian Alps: make walking the purpose

Theth and Valbona feature in the national tourism board’s mountain guidance. We match the route to your experience and fitness, with local guidance on conditions and transfers. A mountain pass crossing is a bigger day than a village walk, so we give it its own time rather than squeezing it into a coastal holiday. [2]

When to go

Coast and high trails need different timing

Start with your preferred activity and we’ll time it for that part of Albania. High routes can keep their snow when lower towns are already comfortable for walking. For a coastal trip, we match the plan to the seasonal services running on your dates. [2]

Getting around

Plan the road stages before choosing hotels

Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza is the natural arrival point for this route [3]; by sea, ferries link Durrës with Bari, Ancona and Trieste in Italy, and Saranda with Corfu, and we match each crossing to its sailing season for your dates. [4] [5] The rebuilt Tirana–Durrës railway and its airport link are scheduled for completion in 2027, so plan moves between Tirana, Berat and the coast by road. [6] We set the pickup point, driving time and breaks for each move. For mountain walks that finish in another valley, we plan the luggage and the onward connection, and leave an easy arrival day before a demanding trail.

A little clarity before you go

Questions before you plan

Can we combine the Alps and coast in one week?

It is better to choose a focus for a short stay. Combining both asks for additional transfer time and a route built around the walking conditions, not simply a longer list of stops.

Is Berat a quick photo stop?

It can be visited briefly, but an overnight stay gives you time for its different quarters and a less hurried look at the architecture. Choose according to your interest in heritage. [1]
